This is really annoying if you are moving the bikes alot since you constantly have to be adjusting the skewers back and forth. When you take the bikes off you have to screw the skewer down enough so that they are tight on the rack when you lock them otherwise even with the skewers locked you can just unscrew them and steal the racks. The other thing is that its a bit of a pain to lock the racks with no bikes on them. I dont think they would come off or anything like that but sometimes the shaking back and forth make me a bit nervous. Only two complaints I have are: Even when I tighten the rack down as much as possible the bikes still wobble like crazy. The rack is easy to install and works pretty well on my road bikes and even on my 15mm through axel mountain bike. The VW base racks are huge and are a funny not-quite-square shape and this was the only rack I could find that would fit them. I have two of these on my VW Golf with the VW base racks. I find both to be mildly frustrating and wish it had more intuitive and easy-to-use design. Overall, for me, it's not a great product since your main interface with the rack is using the fork mount clamp and rear wheel strap. On positive side, the SKS lock core installs easily, it looks attractive, and is secure on my Outback's factory rack. It's a small thing, but my last Yakima rack I could get this mechanism to work with one hand. I have to set the bike down and get it out with two hands. I'm often realizing that I need to get it out of the locking mechanism while holding the bike. Finally, it takes two hands to get the rear tire strap out of the locking mechanism. Same annoyance with putting tension on the cam and twisting the handle. If you have multiple bikes or transport friends' bikes, etc., it's not quick or easy to adjust the fork mount. After getting the bike mount on roof rack, I find it difficult to then get the tension exactly right for the forks - it's a very small margin of error between too tight and too loose. ![]() and then twist the handle to screw in the skewer. ![]() First, when putting the bike mounts on the roof rack, it requires a feat of dexterity since you have to hold the skewer stable, while also pulling the spring loaded locking cam away from the clamping handle. For me, I find the clamping mechanism of the fork to be difficult to use, sometimes maddeningly frustrating. When I got a new car with factory installed rack, had to get new rooftop bike rack. The company was pleasant and generous when I had questions or parts requests. I had a roof rack with ski and bike mounts that lasted for more than a decade. ForkLift Dislike the clamp I've been a loyal customer of Yakima for more than a decade. ![]()
